I Am The Crime
A Fine Mess
A Fine Mess
Snow In Mexico are Andrea and Massimiliano, an Italian shoegaze duo who have been together since 2003.
Andrea previously played bass in a post-core trio and began adding synths to Massimiliano’s band at the time which led to them creating Snow In Mexico. Fueled by acts like The Radio Dept and the fact that they both dislike real drummers (no, not really. Despite their somewhat gloomy sound they seem to joke around a lot), they started making music in Andrea’s room with a drum machine.
The drum machine prevails even to this day (an Roland R8, same as Prince used they’ve informed me), which along with various software and synths by Andrea and guitar and vocals by Massimiliano creates a dreamy and subtly electronical kind of shoegaze.
Their current self-titled EP – which is available to download for free - is about the prettiest thing I’ve heard in a long time. The opening track “You and My Winter” has alluring chill that’s gently thawed away by the warmer “Velvet”, followed by the mellow ”Ride” and the closing “Cinema 5010″ which brings good old Slowdive to mind.
When it comes to future plans, Snow In Mexico seem pretty laid back. According to Andrea they’re focusing on arranging a live set which will include some new material, as will they return to the room in springtime for some recording. If there will ever be a full length remains to be seen though as they cheekily claim to be “soooo lazy”.
