I Don’t Want To Party (But I Want Popcorn)

It’s Friday night, I’m bored and feeling a bit down, I ate far too much chocolate earlier (again) and am currently wishing I had some popcorn to snack on as well. But I have no popcorn, only tea and apples, so here’s some good music I’ve been meaning to write about and that deserves your attention:

Why am I posting this? Because I’m somewhat in love with this song today, that’s why. The Fredrick Carlsson remix is still available here.

An Apology Of Sorts

I’m sorry for the lack of updates lately, but things have been a bit crazy: my niece has some sort of mysterious illness causing her to faint which no doubt has the whole family worried, my mom scared the living daylights out of us by falling and hitting her head (she’s OK now) and then I got a stubborn bout of the flu. A bunch of birthdays and  – of course – Christmas is coming up now, so I can’t promise that things pick up any time soon, but I’ll try!

Want To Help Out A Fellow Music Blogger?

I’m writing this on behalf of my friend Ariane over at the German music site White Tapes.

Despite posting what was a LEGAL link to a Bloc Party song earlier this week, she is being fined 100€ by a major record label. You can read more about it here ( it’s mostly in German – hence my little summary) and if you want to help out, even with just 20 cent, you can leave a comment at the post on White Tapes or send them an e-mail.

Anything helps!

Thanks,

Cecilia

Who’s That Girl? (Duh, It’s Madonna)

Like most kids, I had quite a few favorite movies I could watch over and over and never get tired of.  “Who’s That Girl” starring Madonna was definitely one of them.

Most weekends my mom would take me and my sister to the video store and let us each pick a movie. For a long time I always chose “Who’s That Girl” while my sister went with “Moonwalker”. I was a rabid Madonna fan and she worshiped Michael Jackson so to us it was pretty much perfect.

Our mom probably got tired of those films after the first viewing but she never showed it. Whenever she would laugh at something in “Who’s That Girl” I almost felt proud because I loved it – and Madonna – so much that I took it personal. It went so far that one my sister’s friends took pity on me and gave me her cassette tape of the soundtrack.

So, why the hell am I blabbering about this old movie now? Well, I finally bought it on DVD so I’m feeling a bit nostalgic.

It’s far from the masterpiece I thought of it as a child, but it’s still a fun watch even if only for the memories. Madonna may not be much of an actress but playing the loud-mouthed Nikki Finn probably wasn’t much of a stretch for her (nor was the part of Susan in “Desperately Seeking Susan”) so it works. Plus there’s plenty of other fun stuff to focus on: Griffin Dunne as the uptight Louden, his rich fiance who seemingly has a thing for shabby cab drivers, the disgruntled cops with quite a bit of UST between them, the horrible fabulous 80s fashion and, of course, the songs Madonna contributed to the soundtrack.

Nurse: Okay, okay, what’s your husband’s name?
Nikki Finn: Louden.
Nurse: And his last name?
Nikki Finn: … Clear.

You are a lightning bolt. You are a wonder.

Sorry if things seem a bit dead around here, but I’m not feeling very well at the moment. Rae Spoon’s music and lyrics are providing some comfort though, which I will share:

You are a lightening bolt. You are a wonder.
You are a warning shot before all the others.
Withstanding the pressure of words.
Waving a white flag in a forest of birch.

If you are worn down by being in public.
Remember you are beautiful even in judgement.

The Break Up

Sorry if it’s a bit slow here for a while, but my computer decided to break up with me. It’s going in for counseling today though so hopefully it will return with it’s former feelings for me intact.
