Crime Waves

~ Anders Parker“Calling Out To You” ~
A sweet song, with a simple but effective chorus. I like the layers of instruments and the female background vocals. Pretty! From Parker’s upcoming double concept album Skyscraper Crow which seems very promising from what I’ve heard so far.

~ Southside Stalkers“Robert Downey Jr.” ~
Another fun, upbeat tune by Sweden’s Southside Stalkers. I’m guessing the lyrics are supposed to be from Robert Downey Jr’s point of view, or his name is a metaphor for someone’s who’s been on drugs but cleaned up. And yes, it is a fun song!

~ The Lord Dog Bird“The Gift Of Song In The Lion’s Den” ~
Has a bit of a Band Of Horses feel to it (mostly due to the vocals), except perhaps a bit rawer and lo-fi. This is the solo project of Colin McCann, otherwise guitarist of Wilderness. Great song.

~ Cold Cave“Youth and Lust” ~
Cold indeed. Chilly (but not in an ambient way) electronica with a bit of 80s throwback mixed into it. The monotone male vocals kind of make the electro sound even sharper I think, same with the speaking woman. From the album Love Comes Close which is pretty good as a whole.

~ Amanda Zelina“Midnight Train” ~
This is Amandas second appearance in Crime Waves, “Obsessed” being the previous song I featured. Lovely singer-songwriter stuff. She finally has a full album now, Love Me Till’ I’m Me Again, which will be out this November.

~ Amanda Zelina“Obsessed With You” ~
A sweet pop-soul tune from up and coming singer/songwriter Amanda Zelina. Taken from her debut album Love Me Till I’m Me Again which has been two years in the making. The more I listen to this track, the more I like it.

~ Performance“Love Life” ~
One of the good things about being forced to use my old computer – finding a bunch songs by alternative electro outfit Performance on the harddrive! I can’t help but compare them to 80s synth group The Human Leauge. Except Performance’s male lead singer can actually, you know, sing.

~ Alessi’s Ark“Magic Weather” ~
Next to Polly Scattergood, Alessi’s Ark is probably one of the most hyped English acts at the moment. Alessi is still only in her late teens but sounds far wiser than her young age. Her music is incredibly warm and inviting, which this lovely tune perfectly illustrates.

~ Madison Park vs. Lenny B“More Than This” (Lenny B’s Extended Club Mix) ~
The original by Roxy Music is one of my all time favorite songs – I love it to bits. This downtempo dance version is by no means better (like that could even be possible!) but it has a nice fleeting sound to it. So yeah, I like it.

~ Captain“Animal” ~
New track from Captain, yay! While it doesn’t grip me immediately as “Glorious” did, “Animal” grows by each spin. And Rik Flynn’s raspy vocals are just…guh. Can’t wait for their new album.
