Hotels are one of the latest acts to join the Hidden Shoal family, making themselves right at home with their spacey sound. And when I say spacey, that’s exactly what I mean – this is pop made in outer space, sci-fi pop if you’re so inclined.
Album opener and first single “Hydra” sounds like an updated pop version of the theme to cult science fiction TV-show Lost In Space, while the lush “Near The Desert, Near The City” has us floating in weightlessness, and tunes like “Leilani” and “Port Of Saints” makes me imagine little green men dancing around.
Don’t get the wrong idea though – this isn’t strictly electronic music. While the synthesizers add that little extra sci-fi touch, so do the surf guitars, the thrumming bass and action drums. Picture a more cheerful Joy Division playing in a different galaxy and you might have some idea of what Hotels sound like. Where Hearts Go Broke has its somber moments as well though but overall it’s a pretty fast paced, not to mention fun album.
Where Hearts Go Broke is available through the HSR store and n5Mailorder as well as iTunes, Amazon and eMusic.

American duo Ghost In The Water have a new EP out connected to their album Tooth. Besides two versions of the single “Cardinal Red” the EP also contains three remixes of other tracks from the album: “Pushpins and Tape” (Car Crash Mix), “Magic Wand” (Funk Mix) and “The Campfire” (Double Dragon Mix). It’s an interesting combination as the original version of ”Cardinal Red” is a good indicator of what Tooth sounds like – dreamy, low-key electropop – while the remixes are far sharper and suitable for the dance floor. Not exactly what you’d expect from Hidden Shoal.

Australian label Hidden Shoal have revealed yet another stunning piece of work in the form of City Of Satellites‘ debut EP “The Spook”. Though very ethereal and dreamy, City of Satellites are also quite melodic which I find to be a nice change amongst the sometimes far too abstract post-rock available these days.
The opening track and single “Moon In The Sea” is the highlight but the two remaining songs, “Sleeping in Disgrace” and “The Spook” are just as gorgeous. Consisting of an eerie dreamscape of spooky synths, weeping guitars and singer Jarrod’s frail but beautiful voice, this is definitely worthy of your attention.
“The Spook” EP is available for purchase here where you also can preview all three tracks.

Husband and wife Nathan and Mandy Tensen-Woolery, aka Ghost In The Water are set to release their album Tooth, on April 8. In preparation the duo is offering the first single, Clean Sinks and Folded Laundry for free up until the album release.
If you’re a fan of soft electronic music enveloped in strings and guitars, I strongly suggest you take the opportunity to download this. Besides for the beautiful lead track the single also includes a great b-side, the more upbeat How To Draw a Ghost, both of which will feature on Tooth.
To purchase head over to Hidden Shoal.
