Memory Cassette – “Calls and Responses”

Electronic act Memory Cassette are offering a free EP consisting of remixes by Friend, CFCF, Weird Tapes, Sail A Whale, and Shadow Self in celebration of the release of the Call and Response EP.

Though the original vinyl EP is sold out, limited copies are still available in selected stores and you can also buy it digitally (check out Acephale Records for links and more info).

As for the free remix EP, besides music it is also said to include artwork for each song, all made by Chris Cantalini. To download, go here. It has a very fresh, summer feeling to it.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Weird Tapes Remix

I’ll admit to not being very fond of Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ latest album It’s Blitz!. Compared to their other stuff it feels vapid and empty. I was hoping they’d continue in the same vein as their Is Is EP. This remix of “Heads  Will Roll” from mentioned album is however really good. Not that it makes YYYs sound like their old selves, not at all, but it’s a very nice spin on it. Their current electronic sound is preserved, with the addition of a bit of ambient style. All thanks to Weird Tapes (aka Memory Cassette).

Essentially pretty basic shoegaze: angelic female vocals, twinkling keyboards and harsh guitars mixed with some electronic beats. A formula that works for a reason. From their new album 3-D.

~ The Love Language“Lalita” ~
Fun, energetic and quite noisy indie rock that no doubt will make you move in your seat and drum along on whatever is close by (just watch the cat, OK?). And possibly make you wish that your name was Lalita.

~ Susumu Yokota“A Flower White” ~
The moody guitar makes this song in my opinion. But overall it’s a very pretty, spacey tune featuring female vocals and weeping violins. Sounds sort of like an ode to an alien.

~ Eureka Birds“Oh! My Dear” ~
This has definitely been my song of the week, I haven’t been able to get it out of my head, nor have I wanted to. Starts off as a soft folksy tune and then turns into a near cabaret number that takes you into a completely different time era.

Not quite as mesmerising as “Asleep At A Party” that I posted a while ago but close to. Just get in, enjoy the ride and watch as the trees go by without a sound.

There’s such a thing as “newgaze”? Well apparently that’s what this is. It’s a dreamy, “gazy” song for sure. I love it when she sings “I sleep with one eye open” and the twinkly piano in the background. Amongst many other things I’m too lazy to list right now. Fab tune.

~ VV Brown“Crying Blood” ~
An upbeat, funky as hell song that everyone should have on repeat. And it if makes you dance like a maniac, well that’s perfectly fine. Fact is I demand it! Is VV big in her native UK? I’m out of the loop when it comes to this girl.

~ Should“Spangle” ~
Really good, lo-fi dreampop that I completely overlooked until I put my whole music library on shuffle. Draws you in with its swirly guitars and female vocals in the chorus. Then you’re hooked and there’s nothing you can do but enjoy it.

~ The Hail Seizures“Daddy” ~
One of the many great tracks of the Well, I Don’t See Why Not compilation. Fast-paced folk punk that grabs you for a whirlwind ride with no excuses whatsoever. As it should.

~ Two-Minute Miracles“Conjoined” ~
At first I found this song hilarious for some reason. Well the chorus anyway. I mean it’s great but it sounds kinda country-dorky when he sings in a sort of twangy Texas accent (and apparently they’re from Canada). But then again I am pretty weird. From (weewerk) is 6, another great compilation album.
