Susumu Yokota’s “Tree Surgeon”

Japanese experimental artist Susumu Yokota is offering the song “Tree Surgeon” from his latest album Mother as a free download.

I featured another song from that album, the spacey “A  Flower White”, in an earlier post and described it somewhat as an “an ode to an alien”. “Tree Surgeon” pretty much fits the same description, as it sounds like a quirky space ballad from an old school science fiction movie. The female vocals may seem a bit offbeat during the first listen, but I think it adds to the song’s character in the long run.

Yokota enlisted a range of vocalists for Mother, including including Caroline Ross, Rothko, Caspe Clausen (Efterklang), The Chap, Nancy Elizabeth and Anna Bronsted (Our Broken Garden).

Essentially pretty basic shoegaze: angelic female vocals, twinkling keyboards and harsh guitars mixed with some electronic beats. A formula that works for a reason. From their new album 3-D.

Fun, energetic and quite noisy indie rock that no doubt will make you move in your seat and drum along on whatever is close by (just watch the cat, OK?). And possibly make you wish that your name was Lalita.

The moody guitar makes this song in my opinion. But overall it’s a very pretty, spacey tune featuring female vocals and weeping violins. Sounds sort of like an ode to an alien.

This has definitely been my song of the week, I haven’t been able to get it out of my head, nor have I wanted to. Starts off as a soft folksy tune and then turns into a near cabaret number that takes you into a completely different time era.

Not quite as mesmerising as “Asleep At A Party” that I posted a while ago but close to. Just get in, enjoy the ride and watch as the trees go by without a sound.
